PROPOSED ACTION From email by Michael Dax, NM Defenders of Wildlife:
Last night, SB 81, the Wildlife Trafficking Act, passed through the Senate Finance committee and will be headed to the Senate floor sometime early next week. Now we need you to CALL YOUR SENATOR and ask him or her to vote for SB 81 on the Senate floor. https://nmlegis.gov/Members/Legislator_List?T=S
El Paso, Texas is one of the largest trafficking points in the country with an illegal shipment being detected nearly every day between 2005-2014. Unfortunately, New Mexico does not have any U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officers posted at our ports of entry, making us a large blank spot on the map of which traffickers can take advantage. [The Act will allow all commissioned law enforcement personnel to enforce the new provisions.] That makes it especially urgent for New Mexico to do its part and join the 6 other states that have passed similar bans on an illegal wildlife trafficking.
Please forward this to any friends and ask them to do the same. The more calls and emails we can generate the better!
Once it passes the Senate, we’ll be headed to the House where we will need your support again, so stay tuned!
